Pre-Advance Course

After completing the foundation and the intermediate course, the student will be able to sing about 15 varnams and 30 kritis besides certain other musical forms like the jawali and tillana. Now the student is ready to go a long way into music and have the ability to understand the most complicated aspects of music. In this course, great emphasis is given to make the student to sing Ata tala varnams, chauka kala kritis and Manodarma sangita.

This is the course in which the student is exposed to manodarma sangita or creative music which will mould them into a complete performer. The student will be able to sing kalpana swara, raga alapana and Niraval by the end of this course. They will get a clear picture of the essence of the ragas and develop the skill of creativity within the framework of the raga.

We offer 3 levels in this course.

Level 1

Ata tala varnams and pada varnams are introduced to emhance voice culture. Chauka kala kritis which are a great treasure of Carnatic music, are introduced to the students there by ensuring them good quality music in higher levels.

Learning experience:

      Should have completed the Foundation and Intermediate course

            Or

      Should be able to sing atleast 12 varnams and 25 kritis.

  1. Ata tala varnams in the following ragas:
    1. Shankarabharanam
    2. Vhairavi.
  2. Pada varnam 1
  3. Chauka kala kritis in the following ragas.
    1. Shankarabharanam
    2. Bhairavi
    3. Kalyani
  4. Kritis in the following ragas:
    1. Nalinakanthi.
    2. Latangi.
    3. Sri ranjani
    4. Suddha Danyasi
    5. Devagandari.
  5. Varali pancharatnam of Tyagaraja.
  6. Raga alapana and Kalpana swaras for the kritis taught in the Intermediate course in the following ragas
    1. Kalyani
    2. Hindolam
    3. Malaya marudam
  7. A brief study on Mridangam
  8. An introduction to Manodarma sangita and a detailed study on kalpana swaras.
  9. Biography and contribution of Koteeswara Iyer.
Course objectives

Learns to sing Ata tala varna and Pada varna.

  1. Gets introduced to sing kritis in slower tempo.
  2. Understands the method of singing Kalpana swaras theoretically and practically.
  3. Learns the most difficult pancharatnam of Tyagaraja.
  4. Understands the structure of Mridangam.
  5. Creates interest among the students to persue the next level.
Course duration:

The Duration of this course is assumed to be 6 months[8 classes per month]. But it will depend on the performance and progress of the student. The liberty to decide the time duration of the course for a individual student vests with the teacher.

Level 2

More Ata tala varnas and chauka kala kritis are taught. A new musical form called the padam is introduced.

Learning experience:

      Should have completed the Advanced course level 1

            Or

      Should be able to sing atleast 13 Adi tala varnams and 1 ata tala varnam and 25 madyama kala kritis and 2 Chauka kala kritis.

  3. Chauka kala kritis in the following ragas:
    1. Saveri
    2. Kamboji
    3. Mohanam
  4. Kritis in the following ragas:
    1. Gauri manohari
    2. Hamsanandi.
    3. Valaji.
    4. Purvi kalyani.
    5. Atana.
  5. A padam of Kshetrajna.
  6. Raga alapana and Kalpana swaras for the kritis taught in the Intermediate course in the following ragas
    1. Abogi
    2. Shanmuga priya.
    3. Nattai.
  7. A Study of raga alapana and its pattern
  8. A study of Violin and a brief structure of padam.
  9. Biography of kshetrajna.
Course objectives:
  1. Learns more Ata tala varnas.
  2. Learns chauka kala kritis in more ragas.
  3. A new nusical form padam is introduced.
  4. Able to sing raga alapana and kalpana swaras for further more ragas.
  5. Studies the structure of violinComes to know about the biography and contribution of Kshetrajna.
  6. Creates interest among the students to learn the next level of music.
Course duration:

The Duration of this course is assumed to be 6 months[8 classes per month]. But it will depend on the performance and progress of the student. The liberty to decide the time duration of the course for a individual student vests with the teacher.

Level 3

Two more Ata tala varnas and few more chauka kala kritis are taught. A new nusical form called the raga malika is introduced.

Learning experience:

      Should have completed Level 1 and 2 of the advanced course.

            Or

      Should be able to sing 15 Adi tala varnams, 3 Ata tala varnams, 30 Madyama kala kritis and 4 Chauka kala kritis.

    2. Reetigaulai
  2. Chauka kala kritis in the Following Ragas:
    1. Todi
    2. Madyamavati
    3. Ananda bairavi
  3. Kritis in the following ragas:
    1. pantuvarali
    2. amirtavarshini
    3. kamas.
    4. Charukesii
    5. Ranjani.
  4. Raga Alapana, Niraval and kalpana swara for any 3 Kritis taught in the intermediate course.
  5. A ragamalika
  6. Detailed study of the musical form ragamalika
  7. A detailed study of Niraval
  8. Biography and contribution of badchala Ramadas.
  9. Flute- A brief study.
Course objectives:
  1. Learns 6 Ata tala varnams by the end of this course.
  2. Learns to sing 9 kritis in slower tempo thereby helping them to learn more and more kritis of the same type.
  3. Apart from the chauka kala kritis, 15 more madyama kala kritis are also taught.
  4. Gets to know about ragamalika.
  5. Completes all the pancharatnams of Tyagaraja.
  6. The method of Niraval singing is introduced.
  7. Helps the student to persue the next more complicated level in which the ragam tanam pallavi is introduced!
